About Employer Check

In early 2026, while job hunting in Sydney, I kept coming across the same piece of advice: check the employer's ABN before you apply. Verify them on ASIC. Look up their government contract history.

Good advice. Three separate websites. No tool that did it in one place.

I work in customer experience. My job has always been to notice when a process that should be simple is not. Checking whether a job ad is real before sending off a resume should take ten seconds. It was taking twenty minutes, if people did it at all.

So I built Employer Check.

It checks three government databases: the Australian Business Register, ASIC's business names register, and AusTender, the federal government contracts database. It takes about ten seconds. The result tells you what the data shows, not what to conclude from it.

Job and employment scams in Australia doubled in 2025. Losses from online job scams passed $19 million. Most of those losses started with someone applying for a job that looked real.

Employer Check will not catch every scam. A bad actor with a properly registered ABN will pass every check this tool runs. The disclaimer on every result says exactly that. But it removes three manual steps from a process every job seeker should be doing, and it puts public information in one place instead of three.

Employer Check is not affiliated with any recruitment agency, employer group, or government body. Results are generated automatically from public government data. No employer can pay to change, influence, or remove their result. The tool currently covers Australian-registered employers only. We are exploring coverage in other countries including New Zealand.

Employer Check uses three government sources:

The Australian Business Register is operated by the ATO. It holds ABN registration details, GST registration status, entity type, and registration dates for every business in Australia. Employer Check queries it directly using a registered API credential.

ASIC maintains the national business names register. Employer Check holds a weekly snapshot of this database covering over 3.2 million registered business names in Australia.

AusTender is the federal government's procurement database. Employer Check queries it to check whether an employer has a history of holding federal government contracts. Note: AusTender contract data currently covers transactions up to June 2020. This will be updated as more recent data becomes available through the API.
